Summary
Under the general supervision of a Crew Leader or designated department supervisor, the Construction Equipment Operator II is responsible for operating various heavy and light machinery used in the maintenance, repair, and construction of water and sewer systems. This role involves participating in general maintenance and labor tasks essential for the timely completion of projects and work orders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintains, installs, repairs, and constructs stormwater infrastructure for the City.
- Excavates, transports, sets rebar and forms, pours, and finishes concrete surfaces.
- Operates heavy and light machinery to and from designated work sites.
- Conducts safety evaluations of vehicles and equipment, establishes barricades, cones, and road signage, and utilizes protective gear as required for the task.
- Prepares, collects, and transports tools, materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for work assignments.
- Assists Crew Leaders and fellow crew members in completing work orders safely and efficiently.
- Restores and cleans work sites upon project completion, including laying sod, replanting trees, and repairing surfaces.
- Operates street cleaning equipment as assigned.
- Conducts inspections of inlets, outfalls, creeks, and culverts.
- Performs GPS tracking of new and existing stormwater assets.
- Conducts cleanout operations.
- Provides backup support and on-call assistance to other City departments as required.
- Travels to various work sites and attends meetings, training sessions, and conferences.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned.
- Effectively leads the crew in the absence of the Crew Leader.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair techniques for various heavy and light machinery.
- Understanding of construction and installation methods relevant to the area of assignment.
- Familiarity with occupational safety and health regulations applicable to the role.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, as-builts, and design layouts.
- Awareness of City policies and procedures.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to follow both oral and written instructions related to the assignment.
- Skill in organizing materials, supplies, and equipment necessary for tasks.
- Ability to provide assistance and guidance to work crews effectively.
- Adherence to occupational safety and health protocols.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D., and two (2) years of experience in heavy and light equipment operation and construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screening, physical agility tests, criminal background checks, and MVR checks.
- Must possess a State of Texas Class "A" CDL Driver's License.
- Work is conducted in construction and work site environments.
- May involve exposure to extreme weather conditions, confined spaces, trenches, hazardous materials, fumes, and pathogens.
- Physical activities include balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, and walking.
- Visual acuity is required for operating machinery and inspecting work.
- Primarily involves heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Includes heavy and light construction machinery such as backhoes, skid-steers, front-end loaders, mini-excavators, vacuum trucks, brush trucks, and other departmental vehicles.
