Nursing Supervisor

The Nursing Supervisor is a critical role within our healthcare team, responsible for ensuring the delivery of efficient and effective nursing care while achieving positive clinical outcomes and patient/family satisfaction. This position serves as a clinical operational liaison between the units and the Center Nurse Executive, ADON, and Unit Managers. The successful candidate will be responsible for the clinical operations of the Nursing Units, including ensuring compliance with Genesis policies and procedures, practice standards, and regulations. Additionally, they will facilitate the implementation of the care delivery model and processes, mentor staff, coordinate and communicate with other departments, and ensure patient and family satisfaction.
Responsibilities:
1. Collaborate with the Center Nurse Executive in maintaining adequate nursing coverage to provide safe nursing care for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
2. Effectively utilize existing Client limiting use of overtime and agency personnel.
3. Participate in staff recruitment, including interviewing and selecting nursing personnel.
4. Assess the work performance of nursing staff as it relates to their job description, unit standards of care, and goals of the individual.
5. Assist with the Individual Performance Improvement Plan for staff whose performance does not meet center expectations, and when necessary, recommend or initiate disciplinary action.
6. Recommend and facilitate employee promotions, transfers, and terminations.
7. Collaborate with other departments to provide timely and effective care consistent with individuals' needs, choices, and preferences.
8. Answer any/all emergencies throughout the shift, including change of condition, starting IVs, and pronouncement of death.
9. Foster a strong partnership between the medical staff and the department of nursing.
10. Make recommendations to the Center Nurse Executive regarding nursing care equipment and supplies required to meet the needs of the patients and assure that adequate supplies are available.
11. Promote a culture of safety to ensure a healthy practice and living environment.
12. Participate in meetings to address patient care, survey, and/or standards of care issues as requested.
Clinical Leadership:
1. Work with the CNE to effectively plan, organize, direct, and implement a comprehensive center-wide nursing program.
2. Provide nursing leadership to meet the goals of the Genesis organization and the individual center.
3. Ensure patient care assignments are consistent with staff competencies, scope of practice, and the needs of the patients.
4. Create an environment that is respectful, team-oriented, and responsive to the concerns of staff, patients, and families.
5. Complete rounds on the units to observe patients and determine if nursing needs are being met.
6. Provide patient care when required.
7. Monitor nursing care to ensure positive clinical outcomes and minimize rehospitalizations.
8. Ensure Point Click Care (PCC) is utilized according to the Business Processes.
9. Encourage communication between licensed nursing staff and CNAs during and between shifts.
10. Encourage shift-to-shift communication between incoming and outgoing nursing staff.
11. Ensure timely and accurate compliance of the MDS process and that it reflects the patient's plan of care.
12. Review prospective admissions in relation to existing nursing capabilities and ensure readiness to treat.
13. Contact attending physician to obtain orders as indicated.
14. Ensure that Physician Orders are followed as prescribed.
15. Oversees medication management to ensure adequate supplies and that all medications are handled in accordance with Genesis policy.
16. Ensure that patient's attending physician and family or responsible party are promptly notified of any significant change in the patient's health condition.
17. Facilitate discharge planning process and provide consultation as needed.
Education:
1. Identify educational needs of the staff and communicate needs to the Nurse Practice Educator (NPE).
2. Conduct education in the absence of the NPE.
3. Participate in the evaluation of staff competency.
4. Assist with the orientation of newly hired nursing staff.
5. Demonstrate, teach, and evaluate nursing skills utilized in direct patient care of the unit's specific patient population.
Quality Improvement:
1. Support the CNE in employing a strong Quality Improvement (QI) process for the nursing department.
2. Ensure that the patients' Care Plans are implemented and periodically reviewed and modified as necessary.
3. Ensure that patient's accident/incident, adverse event, and grievances/concerns are fully documented, investigated, reported, and addressed in accordance with Genesis policies and procedures and the Federal/State rules and regulations.
Compliance:
1. Comply with and promote adherence to applicable legal requirements, standards, policies, and procedures, including those within the Compliance and Ethics Program, Standard/Code of Conduct, Federal False Claims Act, and HIPAA.
2. Provide leadership and support for the Compliance and Ethics Program within management area.
3. Ensure timely and accurate reporting and responses to compliance-related issues and monitor the implementation of corrective action plans related to such issues.
4. Ensure that staff participates in orientation and training programs, including but not limited to all required compliance courses and relevant policies and procedures, and that such training is properly documented.
5. Participate in compliance and other required training programs.
6. Provide open lines of communication regarding compliance issues within management area and access to the Integrity Line and ensure that retaliation against staff who report suspected incidences of non-compliance does not occur.
7. Promptly report concerns and suspected incidences of non-compliance to supervisor, Compliance Liaison, or to the Compliance Officer via the Integrity Hotline.
8. Participate in monitoring and auditing activities and investigations, and implementing quality assurance and performance improvement processes, as required.
