Position: Outpatient Medical Coding Specialist

Location: 100% Onsite

Role Summary: The Outpatient Medical Coding Specialist is accountable for the precise assignment of Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, including modifiers and quantities based on medical record documentation for outpatient services. This role involves training and educating staff on coding matters and significantly contributes to coding compliance initiatives.

Qualifications and Certifications: Candidates should possess recognized certifications from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), such as Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or CCS-P (Certified Coder Specialist – Physician), along with relevant experience.

Experience Requirements: A minimum of three years of experience in an outpatient environment (such as physician's offices or ambulatory surgery centers) within the last five years is required. This includes the assignment of E&M, CPT, and HCPCS codes across various medical specialties (e.g., Family Practice, Pediatrics, Gastroenterology, OB/GYN). Experience in ancillary specialties (PT/OT, Radiology, Lab, Nutrition) that do not utilize E&M codes will not be considered qualifying. Coding, auditing, and training for specialties like home health or skilled nursing facilities are also excluded from qualifying experience. Two years of outpatient or ambulatory surgery experience may be acceptable if obtained in a military medical facility.

Essential Skills: Candidates must demonstrate excellent computer proficiency and communication skills. The ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines is crucial.

Additional Information: Prior experience in a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) coding environment is preferred. A coding assessment will be required as part of the selection process. Proof of immunizations, including COVID-19 vaccination or documented exceptions, is mandatory. A security clearance (U.S. citizenship required) must be obtained prior to commencing the position.
