Position Summary
The Family Support Specialist will assist parents with children in foster care by helping them understand and navigate the complexities of the foster care system. This role is crucial in fostering hope and addressing family challenges to facilitate the goal of reunification. Many families face obstacles rooted in oppression, intergenerational poverty, and trauma, which affect their engagement in the case planning process. The Family Support Specialist will empower parents throughout this process, providing them with options and the autonomy to make informed decisions for their families.
This position emphasizes building strong connections with parents and collaborating effectively with case planners. Each Family Support Specialist will be assigned to a specific case planning unit, providing support to parents and integrating their insights into the decision-making processes of the foster care agency, thereby enhancing the likelihood of children returning home safely and promptly.
All specialists will receive training and ongoing support through Rise, a parent-led advocacy organization in NYC. Training will encompass restorative justice principles, self-care strategies, knowledge of child welfare policies, relationship-building for mentorship, and the establishment of a supportive advocacy network.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and nurture relationships with parents, assisting them in making informed decisions for their families, coping with the trauma associated with foster care, and maintaining connections with their children during placements.
- Prepare and accompany parents to Family Team Conferences.
- Report to a supervisor within the foster care unit and collaborate with case planners.
- Provide insights and observations to guide decision-making within their assigned cases.
- Implement the Parents Empowering Parents (PEP) model, focusing on key practices during the initial 90 days of a case to orient parents to the service planning process; share resources from Rise to support parents.
- Conduct home visits and accompany parents to appointments with various service providers as necessary.
- Offer emotional support to parents during court appearances, including encouragement and accompaniment as needed.
- Guide parents in maximizing Family Time, offering suggestions for enhancing family visits, and supervising visits as appropriate.
- Acknowledge and celebrate parents' progress towards reunification.
- Inform parents about supportive interventions to strengthen their family units.
- Assist parents in navigating available resources and developing negotiation skills.
- Coach parents to enhance their problem-solving abilities while identifying their strengths and priorities.
- Document activities in Progress Notes and other relevant formats.
- Participate in all relevant program and departmental meetings.
- Perform additional tasks to support parents as required.
Qualifications
- Personal experience with the child welfare system as a parent, including having a child placed in foster care or being involved in a court-ordered supervision case. Previous child welfare cases must be closed for at least one year.
- Strong collaborative skills.
- Ability to engage and positively influence individuals.
- A genuine appreciation for the unique motivations of individuals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate parent engagement, particularly on sensitive topics related to trauma and healing.
- Proficient writing skills.

Compensation:
$43,000 - $45,000
