About DMC University Laboratories

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a comprehensive laboratory system that serves the eight hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL encompasses Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, and multiple rapid response hospital laboratories, alongside a Centralized Stat Lab and a Centralized Blood Bank Lab. Our outreach infrastructure includes patient service centers, remote laboratories, marketing personnel, a courier system, and a billing department. We proudly serve the Southeast Michigan market with a robust test menu exceeding 1,000 tests, including advanced specialty tests, while maintaining less than 1% of tests sent to external reference laboratories.

Key Responsibilities

Under general supervision, the Histology Technician will:

  • Receive and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for microscopic and pathological examination.
  • Log and perform standard histological procedures such as embedding, sectioning, staining, and labeling.
  • Conduct advanced histotechniques including immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
  • Assist pathologists with gross dissection of tissue specimens, ensuring proper setup of instruments and preparation of chemical reagents.
  • Manage the filing and retrieval of slides, paraffin blocks, and surgical pathology reports, correlating slides with surgical reports for pathologist review.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control and preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Participate in training of laboratory personnel and contribute to the development and implementation of new procedures and research projects.
  • Assist in medical photography tasks as required.
Qualifications

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • High school diploma with two years of histotechnology training, or
  • Associate of Science degree or equivalent college credits in science with one year of histotechnology training, or
  • Certificate from an accredited histotechnology program.
  • Must be registered as HTL (Histotechnologist), HT (Histotechnician), or registry eligible through the ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists).
