UPMC Passavant, recognized with the ANCC Magnet designation, is seeking a Full-Time Surgical Technologist to join our Operating Room team. This role primarily focuses on the Cardiac Vascular Operating Room (CVOR), with the expectation of rotating through general surgical cases based on operational needs and staffing levels.

Shift Information:

  • Daytime shifts, Monday through Friday
  • On-call responsibilities for cardiac and vascular procedures
  • Detailed shift discussions will occur during the interview process

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure proper labeling and delivery of medications to the surgical team in accordance with established protocols.
  • Prepare the operating room prior to procedures by arranging surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions.
  • Assemble both sterile and non-sterile surgical tools as required.
  • Verify and adjust equipment functionality to ensure optimal performance.
  • During surgical procedures, efficiently provide instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants.
  • Assist in holding retractors, cutting sutures, and managing the surgical site under the surgeon's supervision, including counting sponges, needles, and instruments.
  • Support the surgical team in the preparation and care of specimens for laboratory analysis and assist with dressing applications.
  • Aid the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Post-surgery, assist in transferring patients to recovery.
  • Maintain cleanliness and restock the operating room as necessary.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by ensuring proper hygiene and aseptic conditions.
  • May assist in transporting patients to the operating room and positioning them appropriately.
  • Uphold a clean and safe environment by remaining vigilant to safety protocols and aseptic techniques.
  • Entry-level position requiring 0 to 2 years of experience.
  • Compliance with PA legislation regarding surgical technology education and certification.
  • Candidates must have completed a program from a nationally recognized institution or equivalent military training.
  • Continuing education is mandatory for non-certified individuals, requiring 30 hours every two years.
  • Specialty Experience: Surgical specialties include but are not limited to: general surgery, orthopedics, vascular surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic surgery, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic procedures.
  • Access to medications is limited to distribution to nursing staff.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC) within six months of program completion.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Compliance with Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting, Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance, all with renewal requirements.
  • Staff who were employed in surgical technology prior to the law's effective date may be exempt from certification requirements.
