Position Overview

The Molecular Genetics Specialist plays a vital role within the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Molecular Biology Core Facilities, focusing on the quality assessment of Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) samples, preparation of libraries, and conducting sequencing evaluations.

This position requires strict adherence to the regulations and standards set forth by the institution and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S). The specialist is responsible for the operation, calibration, and upkeep of NGS instruments and associated equipment, ensuring accurate data acquisition, analysis, and thorough documentation of findings.

The role also involves contributing to the creation and validation of innovative laboratory procedures and tests, alongside maintaining essential regulatory documentation and engaging in quality control and assurance activities.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Duties:
- Operate and maintain genomics instrumentation, ensuring accurate data acquisition for both patient and research samples.
- Conduct calibration, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment.
- Prepare and maintain reagents related to genomics.
- Analyze data, document results, and maintain test records in accordance with laboratory protocols.
- Execute tests following standard operating procedures (SOPs) that may involve various methodologies, including automated and manual technologies.
- Archive and retrieve samples for long-term storage and further testing.
- Ensure timely production and documentation of processing data, achieving expected results within established turnaround times.
- Identify and resolve issues related to instruments, reagents, and systems.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on equipment as needed.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Duties:
- Conduct quality control activities and document QA/QC efforts as per established policies and SOPs.
- Participate in the validation of new instruments and methodologies.
- Continuously assess existing processes for improvement opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records of procedures and data, both manually and electronically.

Additional Responsibilities:
- Promote safety compliance and demonstrate appropriate safety behaviors.
- Attend safety training sessions as required.

Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science, Medical Technology, or a related field is required.
- No prior experience is necessary, though experience in a molecular biology research laboratory is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in the operation of basic laboratory equipment and understanding of lab safety protocols.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and maintain proficiency in sterile techniques.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
