The Opportunity: Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist

Why This Role Is Important

Under the guidance of the Director of Ambulatory Pharmacy Services, the Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist will engage in a variety of professional functions aimed at delivering optimal pharmaceutical care to patients. The pharmacist's responsibilities will primarily involve assisting healthcare providers and nursing staff with clinical inquiries, supervising pharmacy technicians, overseeing medication dispensing, participating in internal committees, reviewing medication orders, engaging in the medication reconciliation process for surgical patients, responding to emergencies within the surgical center, and mentoring Doctor of Pharmacy students and pharmacy residents.

Key Responsibilities

The Outpatient Surgery Pharmacist will be primarily responsible for:
  • Reviewing and approving peri-operative medication orders for appropriateness based on current clinical guidelines and patient-specific factors.
  • Providing guidance to clinicians on drug selection to optimize therapy and addressing drug information inquiries.
  • Supervising pharmacy technician activities and conducting quality checks as necessary.
  • Completing relevant clinical competencies and participating in new clinical pharmacy initiatives.
  • Assisting in the review and creation of sterile compounding recipes to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Verifying compounded preparations for accuracy, including additives and labeling.
  • Managing the ordering, storage, and handling of medications and supplies in the perioperative area.
  • Ensuring compliance with controlled substance distribution regulations.
  • Preparing anesthesia trays and overseeing the refilling of anesthesia workstations.
  • Ensuring adherence to pharmaceutical waste disposal regulations and contributing to cost containment strategies.
  • Conducting narcotic audits to prevent drug diversion.
  • Providing patient and family counseling on medications, including drug interactions.
  • Maintaining the MGB iCare formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements.
  • Participating in the training and mentoring of pharmacists, pharmacy interns, and technicians.
  • Assisting in the development of policies and procedures related to medication safety.
  • Conducting required media fill tests and fingerprint testing.
  • Welcoming surgical center staff at the pharmacy entrance and managing incoming calls.
  • Educating perioperative staff on new medication policies and conducting in-services as needed.
  • Participating in quality and safety projects outside of regular duties.
  • Reviewing quarterly medication quality audits for the pharmacy satellite and clinics.
  • Training new anesthesia providers and nursing staff on pharmacy services and controlled substance management.
  • Responding to emergencies in the perioperative areas and maintaining ACLS certification.
  • Participating in departmental meetings as required.
  • Performing other assigned duties as necessary.
Qualifications

Required Experience
  • Graduation from an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree required.
  • Current licensure or eligibility for licensure to practice pharmacy in New Hampshire.
Preferred Experience
  • Completion of an ASHP accredited PGY1 residency.
  • 1-2 years of experience in AMC and community care settings, preferably in perioperative environments.
  • Knowledge of USP standards.
  • Understanding of automated dispensing cabinet functionality and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy regulations for ambulatory surgery centers.
  • Experience with Epic Willow and OpTime systems.
  • Knowledge of LEAN methodologies.
Additional Information

• Schedule: Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends and extended hours.

• Job Type: Per Diem
