Overview: The Correctional Managed Care program is dedicated to addressing the healthcare needs of marginalized patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

POSITION SUMMARY:

This role involves delivering expert medical services related to the assessment and treatment of inmate patients and staff injured during TDCJ-ID work-related activities. The position ensures prompt and accessible healthcare for the inmate demographic. The physician is responsible for making conclusive medical decisions regarding inmate care in accordance with Health Services Policies and Procedures. Additionally, this role oversees all Health Services operations within the unit and holds complete accountability for the Health Services personnel assigned to that unit. The physician operates under the supervision of the Regional Physician, with ample opportunity for initiative and independent decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct comprehensive medical histories and examinations, develop clinical impressions based on findings, order diagnostic tests, interpret laboratory and imaging results, prescribe medications, and provide treatments based on clinical evaluations.
  • Review and assess medical records, update medical classifications, complete admission, progress, and discharge documentation, and conduct rounds on patients in infirmaries or regional medical facilities.
  • Refer patients to specialists for further consultations, evaluations, and treatments as necessary.
  • Participate in after-hours and weekend patient care rotations alongside other physicians.
  • May oversee all physicians and mid-level practitioners directly.
  • Manage and supervise all medical department operations within the unit, ensuring adherence to standards, regulations, policies, procedures, and court mandates.
  • Adhere to the department's internal controls and reporting structures.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Standard clinical tools and equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position located within a correctional facility. Security clearance and pre-employment drug testing are mandatory.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • A valid medical practice license issued by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners is required.
  • Current DEA controlled substances registration must be maintained.
Salary is commensurate with relevant work experience.
