Osawatomie State Hospital is licensed by the State of Kansas to provide care and treatment for adults diagnosed with psychiatric disorders regardless of ability to pay. The facility includes two hospitals on the Osawatomie campus: Osawatomie State Hospital (OSH) and Adair Acute Care (AAC), which is a 60-bed facility certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

This position is based at Adair Acute Care at Osawatomie State Hospital, with varying days and hours. Weekend work may be required, and a negative drug screen is a condition of employment.

All employees are expected to collaborate harmoniously with colleagues to deliver efficient and effective customer service. This includes utilizing available free time to assist others with work assignments, contributing positively to the work environment, and adhering to standards of conduct regarding attendance and punctuality.

Position Overview:

The Recreation Therapist's primary goal is to provide optimal patient care and outcomes by addressing each patient's unique mental, social, physical, and spiritual needs. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing assigned patient caseload upon admission
  • Planning and developing individualized treatment plans with the treatment team
  • Identifying goals and evidence-based recreation therapy intervention strategies
  • Implementing recreation therapy groups and individual interventions
  • Writing weekly progress notes for assigned patients
  • Maintaining ongoing contact and rapport with patients to gauge treatment response
  • Encouraging patient participation in treatment schedules
  • Revising treatment plans as necessary
  • Assisting with the planning and coordination of programs and special events

Physical Requirements:

This role necessitates physical strength to frequently push, pull, twist, bend, squat, walk, and stand for extended periods. The therapist must be capable of lifting and/or restraining individuals, as well as responding to aggressive behaviors using trained techniques. Observational skills are essential to identify and respond to individuals in distress.

Qualifications:

Education: A minimum of a bachelor's degree with NCTRC certification (CTRS) and two years of relevant experience, or eligibility to obtain certification through NCTRC examination within six months with three years of relevant experience. Relevant education may substitute for experience as deemed appropriate by the agency.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in providing therapeutic activities in a hospital or rehabilitation setting.

All candidates must pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services and a law enforcement security clearance in compliance with the Department of Aging and Disability Services policies.
