Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to join our inpatient behavioral health team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As an LPN, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care to our veterans who are undergoing treatment for various mental health conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide care to variable patient populations, family members, and staff, using judgment in selecting the appropriate order and sequence of procedures and treatments.
  • Carry out assigned patient care based on the patients' conditions, accurately report and record relevant patient information.
  • Observe, identify, and respond to the patient's needs for care, including medication, equipment-assisted care, and patient/family education.
  • Prepare and administer prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular and/or intravenously) and perform treatments according to established policies/procedures.
  • Seek RN and/or MD/DO assistance for urgent or emergent patient care situations and initiate appropriate emergency interventions as directed.
  • Establish constructive relationships with individual patients and their families to elicit feelings, attitudes to promote positive relationships, communication, and socialization skills.
  • Perform support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, such as preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during, and following the procedure.
  • Serve as a preceptor in orienting, educating, and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs related to support duties for these more complex, specialized tests/procedures.
Requirements
  • Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
  • Full, active, current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia.
  • Ability to work effectively with patients, family members, and other staff to promote positive relationships, communication, and socialization skills.
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize the need for and to institute emergency measures when indicated, promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO, and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest.
