Child Life Certification from the Association of Child Life Professionals must be obtained within 18 months of the start date. Physical demands of this role include standing or walking intermittently with objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting, pushing, or pulling items weighing 50 pounds or more. This position also requires prolonged periods of sitting at a computer workstation and performing repetitive tasks such as typing, as well as working at heights above four feet and/or in confined spaces.

Job-related travel may be necessary (less than 10% of the time), and there is a risk of injury associated with moving, lifting, or positioning patients, equipment, or materials. Additionally, exposure to loud noises, temperature extremes, hazardous chemicals, and potential injuries such as burns, cuts, or blood-borne pathogens is possible.

Work Schedule Must be flexible to work various shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, as well as holidays.

Position Overview The University of Kentucky is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Child Life Specialist to enhance the well-being of children and families during challenging health experiences.

Our facility is recognized for its comprehensive pediatric services, including a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, providing an exceptional platform for delivering a variety of interventions and support.

In this essential role, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the psychosocial needs of pediatric patients and their families, catering to children from neonatal stages up to 17 years of age.

As a Child Life Specialist, your focus will be on addressing the emotional, developmental, and psychosocial requirements of young patients and their families. You will work diligently to reduce stressors and alleviate anxiety associated with illness, injury, and hospitalization.

Your commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment will significantly enhance the overall experience of our patients and their families.

This position necessitates the completion of a child life internship under the guidance of a certified Child Life Specialist, as mandated by the Association of Child Life Professionals. Certification must be achieved within one year of employment.

Compensation The starting pay for this position has been recently updated to a minimum hourly rate of $21.72, with all rates determined based on the candidate's experience.

Skills and Competencies The ideal candidate will possess experience working with children and families in high-stress environments, excellent communication skills, and a solid understanding of child life assessment, child development theories, and practical applications.

Educational Background A Bachelor's degree in child life, child development, or a health-related field with a child life emphasis is preferred. Completion of a child life internship is required by the start date, and Child Life Certification is necessary within one year of employment.
