Position Overview

The Custer County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated and certified full-time Deputy Sheriff to join our team. This position is vital for both filling a current vacancy and supporting the expansion of our department.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting wage for certified officers is competitive, reaching up to $26.45 per hour, along with a comprehensive benefits package. A shift differential of $1.00 per hour is applicable for hours worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. Benefits include:

  • Paid holidays

Each deputy is assigned a patrol vehicle, and the department provides all necessary duty gear and uniforms.

Community and Responsibilities

Custer County is renowned for its stunning landscapes, encompassing over 1500 square miles and bordering Wyoming. The area is rich in natural beauty, featuring landmarks such as Crazy Horse Memorial and numerous public lands, including Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park.

As a Deputy Sheriff, your responsibilities will include:

  • Enforcing local and state laws
  • Preventing and addressing crime and accidents
  • Serving legal processes of the courts
  • Promoting public safety through community policing
  • Performing additional duties as assigned
Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Possession of a current South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission Certificate
  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • High school diploma or GED certificate
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation
  • No prior felony or domestic violence convictions
  • No Brady or Giglio issues
  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving history
  • Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays
