Job Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Medical Assistant I to join our team at Denver Health. As a Medical Assistant I, you will provide nursing support with various functions such as screening, medication administration, treatments, vitals, and vaccinations. You will also assist the staff with clinical clerical functions and ensure smooth work and patient flow within the Denver Sheriff Health Services.
Essential Functions:
- Accurately and efficiently takes vital signs and basic historical patient data.
- Identifies abnormal patient findings and communicates patient concerns or significant changes in patient's health status to provider or nurse.
- Provides safe administration of medications and immunizations (oral, IM, subcutaneous, and/or intradermal); obtains EKGs, orders appropriate tests as directed by provider; and schedules specialty and follow-up appointments as directed by provider.
- Prepares patients for examinations, assists with examinations, cast or splint applications, minor procedures, and a variety of other medically related tasks within their scope of knowledge.
- Documents accurately and appropriately in-patient medical record.
- Reports change in patient condition to appropriate health care provider in a timely manner.
- Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments/supplies and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization and restocking of exam and treatment rooms.
- Maintains a safe environment by practicing sound safety and infection control practices according to agency policies and procedures.
- Engages in performance appraisal on a routine basis by accepting and providing constructive feedback and integrates feedback into practice.
- Participates in competency reviews as required by department and assumes accountability for achieving goals set jointly with the manager for the next evaluation period.
- May perform phlebotomy and perform various laboratory procedures after competency verified.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED Required.
- Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Certificate from a clinical Medical Assistant school Required or Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program accredited program of Licensed Practical Nursing with an active LPN license Required.
- Less than 1 year Completion of a 160 hour externship Required or less than 1 year 6 month direct patient care in outpatient setting Required.
Licenses and Certifications:
- BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of and the ability to use medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
- Skill in taking vital signs.
- Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, employees, physicians, and the public.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly.
- Ability to learn and be proficient in electronic health record and paper record documentation.
