Surgical Technician Extern Position

About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Surgical Technician Extern to join our team at WVU Medicine. As a Surgical Technician Extern, you will play a critical role in providing intraoperative care to patients by functioning as the scrub person assisting the surgical team during operative procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform the scrub role during selectively assigned surgical procedures in the OR.
- Utilize quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile role in the OR.
- Assist the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
- Perform sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established policies.
- Assist by gowning and gloving surgeons; position equipment and instruments.
- Pass sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
- Operate specialty equipment after receiving specific training.
- Assist with transportation and positioning of OR patients.
- Perform designated procedures as needed following departmental policies/procedures/practice guidelines.
- Process supplies, instruments, and equipment used in patient care by preparing supplies/equipment for surgical procedure following preference cards.
- Assist with sterilization by cleaning used instruments during case and at case conclusion.
- Load case cart post procedure.
- Assist with maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
- As assigned, assist with inventory restocking.
- Clean and prepare work environment including the return of equipment to designated storage locations.
- Remove out of date items. Discard or reprocess following established guidelines.
- Document appropriately to foster the work of the department by assisting with clerical work and record keeping duties.
- Provide input to the proper recording of patient charges.
- Assist with the transportation of case carts and specialty carts.
- Assist with maintenance of hallway egress.
- Participate in post case cleaning processes.
- Account for all sharps used on sterile field. Dispose hazardous materials per departmental policies/procedures.
Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Surgical Tech program.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
