We are seeking a skilled School Nurse to join our team at the Town of West Hartford. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a comprehensive school health program that promotes student well-being by offering emergency and routine nursing assessments and interventions.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a comprehensive School Health program providing care to a wide range of students, including those with physical and emotional disabilities.
- Assess immediate health problems presented by students and develop nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions unique to students' needs.
- Provide planning, implementation, and evaluation of required screening programs, including vision, audiometric, postural, growth, and development.
- Develop methods of communication for the documentation and follow-up of communicable diseases and intervention required for immunization standards.
- Assist in the implementation of an emergency care system with the school(s) to provide judgment and intervention appropriate to emergent conditions.
- Assist in planning and implementation of required health physical assessments required for students.
- Provide appropriate nursing interventions for at-risk populations.
- Maintain and update student health records.
- Collect information about the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner and utilize collected data to determine nursing diagnoses.
- Maintain the school health office, ensuring necessary supplies and equipment are present and operational.
- Initiate a health school environment by using nursing judgment to evaluate classroom and other general areas for health and safety hazards and by motivating, reinforcing, and encouraging students and school staff to participate in developing attitudes enhancing healthy behavior.
- Prepare and conduct Health Education programs.
- Communicate and interact with parents, teachers, counselors, professional colleagues in appropriate referral and placement modalities, and disseminate information regarding health difficulties, documenting required prescription and interventions.
- Perform job duties in the work environment as described above.
- Prepare monthly and annual reports and mandated reporting to community agencies, as necessary.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, staff development programs, and other meetings.
- Collaborate with other professionals in planning to assure quality health care provided to students.
- Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team, assisting students, families, and school personnel achieve optimal levels of wellness through health education.
- In accordance with CGS §, attend continuing education programs and training.
- Assume responsibility for continuing education and professional development and contribute to the professional development of others.
- Contribute to nursing and school health through innovations in theory and practice and participation in research.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree, preferably in nursing, from a program approved by the National League for Nursing and a current Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut with one or more years' experience in public health or school nursing.
- Individual must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification within one year of hiring date.
- Candidate(s) shall acknowledge that as a School Nurse they shall be subject to and must satisfactorily complete a background check including a criminal history record check in compliance with C.G.S., § c) and §29-17a.
