General Statement of Duties:
Responsible for managing the harm reduction initiatives and supporting the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program, providing assistance to individuals with substance use challenges who are either in recovery or currently using substances.
Utilizes personal experiences to engage with clients as they assess their readiness for recovery and collaborates with them to facilitate access to recovery services or connections to community resources.
Works in partnership with the behavioral health, medical, and dental teams to enhance the continuum of care focused on recovery based on individual needs.
Contributes to a culture that is free of stigma related to substance use challenges; exemplifies and promotes understanding of effective recovery strategies and behaviors.
Conducts outreach to partner organizations and participates in community events.Essential Responsibilities:
- Through the harm reduction program, provide clients with education on safe substance use practices, overdose prevention, and infectious disease awareness;
- Distribute supplies for safe substance use and overdose reversal (naloxone);
- Coordinate referrals to recovery treatment, behavioral health services, medical care, and dental care.
- Maintain inventory for harm reduction supplies, periodically reassessing the range of items offered based on community trends and needs.
- Stay informed of and comply with any regulatory changes related to syringe services, drug testing supplies, and other harm reduction strategies.
- Encourage recovery skills and self-efficacy while demonstrating a caring, culturally sensitive, and compassionate demeanor with a strengths-based, person-centered approach.
- Build trusting relationships with clients, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and modeling skills or behaviors necessary for achieving and sustaining recovery.
- Understand the role of MAT in achieving and maintaining sobriety and adhere to clinical policies and procedures related to MAT.
- Support adherence to clinical treatment plans, including MAT, and advocate for clients as they navigate barriers to recovery.
- Highlight the significance of comprehensive health in recovery and wellness, including primary care, dental care, and health-promoting practices such as nutrition and physical activity.
- Assist individuals in accessing additional recovery supports, such as transportation, housing, childcare, and employment opportunities.
- Provide support and advocacy for individuals involved with the criminal justice system.
- Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and strive to resolve work-related issues promptly.
- Meet regularly with the supervisor and communicate any concerns or questions regarding clients or program aspects to the supervisor and relevant staff.
- Consult, collaborate, and communicate with external service providers, schools, law enforcement, and courts as appropriate, in compliance with privacy regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of services provided and client outcomes;
- Complete all documentation in a timely manner according to agency policies and state requirements.
- Stay current with all applicable agency policies and procedures and operate according to these standards.
- Comply with relevant regulations and educational/certification requirements.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and other assigned meetings to remain informed on procedures and policies.
- Fulfill other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Personal experience with substance use challenges, behavior change, and recovery.
- Knowledge of available services for individuals with substance use challenges.
- Certification as an Ohio Peer Supporter.
- Skills in crisis intervention and de-escalation.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients.
- Meet agency requirements for background checks.
- Possess a valid Ohio driver's license and maintain motor vehicle liability insurance.
- Willingness to transport clients when necessary.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an organization and adhere to established policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of and adherence to relevant laws and ethical standards.
Minimum Educational/Licensure Requirements:
Valid Ohio Peer Support Certification.
Minimum Experience Requirements:
Two years of experience preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs.
