The primary objective of the Emergency Medical Technician role is to deliver and oversee pre-hospital Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS, ALS) services under various environmental conditions. This position collaborates with fellow EMS personnel and functions as a vital member of the patient care
team, operating under the guidance of a licensed Medical Control Physician (MCP) and under the oversight of an EMS Supervisor. The EMT is responsible for providing care to patients across all age groups and demographics who are experiencing critical health issues or injuries. This includes utilizing age-appropriate equipment and techniques to effectively assess, treat, transport, and transfer patients to the appropriate medical facility, while ensuring all necessary documentation is completed and supporting efficient EMS operations, thereby representing University Hospital in a professional manner.
Required Qualifications
The Emergency Medical Technician must possess a minimum of two (2) years of experience in EMS and two (2) years of driving experience in an EMS capacity, maintaining a clean driving record. It is preferred that the candidate has completed the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator (CEVO) training course.
Additionally, it is preferred that the candidate holds a valid Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) provider certification.
The EMT must successfully pass a medical evaluation and a respirator fit test, and be able to wear an N95 particulate filter respirator mask in compliance with PEOSHA standards as a condition of employment. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish are preferred. Previous experience with electronic medical records is also preferred. Active, valid certification as a NJ Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic or NJ Mobile Intensive Care Nurse.
Applicants lacking NJ MICN certification must obtain this certification prior to the end of the probationary period in accordance with state regulations to remain employed. Certification must be maintained without interruption.
Paramedic applicants seeking reciprocity from New Jersey may receive a conditional offer of employment upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and background check.
A provisional EMT-Paramedic certification from the NJDOH Office of Emergency Medical Services must be secured before commencing work. Applicants must obtain New Jersey Paramedic certification in accordance with state regulations to maintain employment.A valid driver's license with NJ driving privileges is required, and the license must comply with DOT/MVC regulations for the type/size/weight of the assigned vehicle(s).

Physical Requirements:
The Emergency Medical Technician must be in excellent physical condition and will routinely be required to see colors, hear voice, phone, and radio communications, read, speak, and communicate in English, both verbally and in writing, smell, sit, stand, walk, lift, operate a motor vehicle, and utilize computer, wireless, and other electronic equipment.
The EMT will regularly reach with hands and arms and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
Good manual dexterity and intermittent moderate to heavy physical exertion are necessary when performing job activities. The EMT must be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 lbs. frequently and up to 125 lbs. occasionally.Work Environment:
The Emergency Medical Technician must be able to work in all weather and environmental conditions, including varying or extreme temperatures, and lift and move patients in all circumstances.
The EMT must be able to perform all duties consistent with providing BLS and ALS in the pre-hospital environment.The EMT will be intermittently exposed to moderate or greater noise and subject to unpredictable situations and patient crises, both medical and psychiatric.
The EMT may occasionally encounter patients exhibiting aggressive behaviors.There is a potential risk of exposure to blood-borne and respiratory pathogens for the EMT, necessitating the use of personal protective equipment.
In certain situations, the EMT may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, run, or jump.The EMT may, in rare circumstances, be required to work under austere conditions such as disaster settings, dangerous situations, or hazardous environments.
