Job Title: Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist to join our team at St. Vincent Hospital. As a Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for performing venipuncture and capillary puncture on adult, neonatal, and pediatric patients, as well as assisting in obtaining specimens from indwelling lines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on patients according to established protocol.
  • Assist in obtaining specimens from indwelling lines.
  • Instruct patients in all urine collection procedures and testing requirements.
  • Participate in education of students and new personnel.
  • Work with computer and communicate in a manner that promotes Clinic and laboratory professionalism as well as a comfortable experience for the patient.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and utilize safety & standard precautions during patient contact and when handling contaminated materials.
  • Prepare supplies to efficiently collect blood products and other specimens.
  • Process test orders in the computer system, utilizing both Epic and Sunquest according to laboratory protocols.
  • Perform Point of care (POC) testing and result POC tests with accuracy in the laboratory information system.
  • Identify patients and labels specimens accurately & according to policy.
  • Maintain knowledge regarding specimen test requirements and volumes for laboratory testing.
  • Seek guidance and direction as necessary as this position requires some supervision in performance of duties.
  • Assist in care of patient prior to, during, and after collection.
  • Instruct patients on non-blood specimen collections including urine collection with proper completion of forms.
  • Know how to prioritize STAT, urgent, and routine tests.
  • Clean and maintain equipment and workspace in work area.
  • Inventory supplies for re-order. Orders and maintains supplies.
  • Attend required meetings.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through in-service meetings and education programs.
  • Maintain CPR certification and other required training.

  • Positive & professional customer service attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills with patients and internal and external customers of the lab.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Good telephone etiquette.
  • Promote comfortable phlebotomy in a professional manner.
  • Possess information, skill, and ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
