Program Overview

The Equity Educator Intern Program at Sierra Community College is a unique opportunity for graduate students to gain hands-on experience in an educational setting. This program is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of instruction, with a focus on equity and student-centered training.

Program Structure

The program consists of two main components:

  1. Approximately 16 hours of equity and student-centered training, which includes no cost to the participant.
  2. Approximately 64 hours of classroom observation and program requirements, including no more than 6 hours of direct instruction.

This program is open to individuals interested in non-instructional faculty roles, such as counselors, librarians, and other support staff.

Expectations and Opportunities

As an Equity Educator Intern, you can expect to:

  1. Attend the equity and student-centered training.
  2. Attend every class meeting led by your assigned Faculty Ambassador Mentor in the Spring 2025 semester.
  3. Meet with your assigned Faculty Ambassador Mentor for a minimum of 15 minutes per week to discuss any questions, concerns, ideas, or lesson plans.
  4. Teach a minimum of 3, not to exceed 4, class sessions and/or trainings.
  5. Meet with your assigned Faculty Ambassador Mentor for a minimum of 30 minutes subsequent to each class session taught to exchange feedback.
  6. Observe at least one other unassigned Faculty Ambassador's class.
  7. Participate in a mid-semester facilitated discussion with the Equity Educator cohort.
  8. Attend an end-of-semester debrief and celebration.
  9. Obtain guidance regarding the part-time faculty application and interview process.
  10. Optional: Additional $1000 stipend offered for Equity Educators who complete one of the following professional development opportunities: Online Teaching Boot-Up, Equity & Inclusion Faculty Certificate Series-Unit 1, or Equitable Instruction Workshop (EIW).

The Equity Educator program mandatory obligation is approximately 80 hours.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for this program, you must:

  1. Be a graduate student within one year of completion of a Master's degree or Doctorate degree.
  2. Meet the minimum qualifications of a subject-matter discipline.
  3. Have no prior paid higher education teaching experience.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to utilize an equity mindset framework in and out of the classroom.

Compensation

As an Equity Educator Intern, you will receive a $500 stipend after completion of the program. Additionally, you may be eligible for an optional $1000 stipend for completing one of the professional development opportunities listed above.

  • Provide specific examples that reflect your demonstrated experience understanding the needs of historically underrepresented populations.
  • Your anticipated class and/or work schedule for the Spring 2025 term.
