Job Description:
As an Environmental Protection Specialist II with the Department of State Health Services, you will play a critical role in ensuring the protection of public health and the environment. Your primary responsibility will be to conduct inspections and investigations at retail stores, public facilities, and other establishments to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. This will involve identifying deficiencies and taking necessary actions to address them. You will also be responsible for providing technical assistance and consultations to the regulated community, as well as preparing reports and other administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations
• Identify deficiencies and take necessary actions to address them

• Prepare reports and other administrative tasks

Requirements:
A minimum of one year of work experience conducting compliance inspections, complaint investigations, or surveys, and interpreting or explaining, and/or enforcing laws or regulations. Prefer a four-year college degree or two years of work experience enforcing laws or regulations plus an associate degree may be substituted for the college degree.

Working Conditions:
Inspections may require irregular working hours, overnight travel, and working hours other than Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Frequent daytime travel will be required to perform inspection duties. Must provide transportation with a personal vehicle that is licensed, inspected and insured in accordance with Texas traffic laws.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Knowledge of state and federal laws and rules pertaining to abusable volatile chemicals, hazardous consumer products, tattoo and body piercing studios, and public health. Knowledge of inspection and sampling criteria, evidence development, disaster investigations, and special investigations using established inspection techniques. Skill in composing, editing, and reviewing technical reports and documents. Ability to observe and interpret situations; analyze and solve work problems; develop logical conclusions. Ability to communicate and interact effectively with other state and federal agencies, industry, staff, media and the public.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Texas Department of Public Safety issued driver's license.
