Job Description

Position Title: Flatbed Driver

Department: Drivers/Operations

Reports to: Route Supervisor

Position Summary:

Perform a variety of waste collection and recycling functions, including collecting and transporting waste and recyclable materials from various locations. This position will operate one-ton and larger delivery vans, and forklifts.

Essential Functions/Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct DOT pre-and post-trip inspections, including checking tire pressure, fluid levels, safety equipment, gauges, and controls.
  • Operate company vehicles in accordance with DOT and company regulations.
  • Communicate with the Route Supervisor and Customer Service Group regarding route status.
  • Monitor gauges, dials, and other indicators.
  • Fulfill assigned route pick-ups.
  • Manage route loaders.
  • Operate hydraulic controls.
  • Empty trucks at established disposal sites.
  • Clean trucks and compactors as needed.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures.
  • Hold a valid forklift operator's certification.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment safely in all weather conditions and working environments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of recycling commodity classifications and grades of paper and plastics.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of commingled collection processes and allowable materials.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper loading and transportation procedures for commodities.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Hold a commercial driver's license and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule when necessary.
  • Follow all company policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook Code of Conduct.
  • Follow all company safety guidelines.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Hiring Requirements/Preferences:

  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Possess a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possess a valid Class A CDL (Class A with Airbrake endorsement).
  • Minimum 1 year CDL driving experience.
  • Strong work ethic.
  • Previous trash collection experience (minimum 5 years).
  • Meet or exceed the medical standard of DOT.
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow directions.
  • Capable of performing all essential job functions, including heavy lifting, bending, and sitting for extended periods.
  • Meet all qualifications as defined under DOT regulation 49 CFR.
  • Meet PRATT Driver MVR Qualification Standards.
  • Ability to complete and maintain driver logs.
  • Ability to maintain and identify equipment maintenance needs.
  • Ability to function in extreme temperatures.
  • Available for weekend work schedules.
  • Pass a pre-employment Fit for Work physical.
  • Provide valid documentation for the I-9 Immigration document.
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Professional attitude and conduct.
  • Multi-task, interpersonal communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • High degree of safety awareness and safety discipline.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Strictly adhere to safety requirements and company policies.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and assist coworkers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated operations and production areas.
