Materials and Processes Engineer

At Blue Origin, we're pushing the boundaries of space exploration and development. As a Materials and Processes Engineer, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the safety and reliability of our space vehicles. Your expertise will be instrumental in developing and qualifying materials and processes for our lunar transportation systems.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement materials and processes for metallic and composite materials, including forging, casting, forming, extrusion, plating, coating, friction welding, brazing, anodization, and passivation.
  • Support design, analysis, materials selection, process development, and qualification for space vehicles.
  • Review production drawings for large complex assemblies, documenting reviews to established requirements.
  • Responsible for M&P signatory release of engineering drawings for parts and assemblies.
  • Lead and coordinate internal and external M&P efforts, including development of specifications, supplier qualification, First Article Inspection, mechanical testing, and customer-facing updates.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated M&P Engineering experience on a production flight program.
  • Experience in materials and manufacturing process review and selection, development, and qualification for aerospace applications.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes.
  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties of aerospace-grade materials.
  • Experience organizing and managing materials and process-related data in a company-accessible database.
  • Experience with design and qualification for at least one of the following areas: welding qualification, metallic inserts, fasteners, EMI & EMC, corrosion, flammability, and FST, solid or sandwich laminate composite structures.
  • Ability to travel to support development and testing opportunities at other Blue Origin and vendor sites.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
Desired:
  • M.S. degree in Aerospace, Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of metallic materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS, metallography, and mechanical testing).
  • In-depth knowledge of composite materials characterization techniques (e.g., ultrasound, micrography, and mechanical testing).
  • Experience with stiffened skin construction, castings, and large forgings.
  • Demonstrated experience developing new aerospace processes and refining existing ones.
  • Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.
  • Experience planning and executing material allowables or qualification programs.
  • Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis (e.g., MMPDS, CMH-17).
