We are seeking a skilled Veterinary Technician to join our team at the Michigan State University Veterinary Medical Center. As a Veterinary Technician, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional patient care for ill and injured animals in our Large Animal Anesthesia Department.
Key Responsibilities- Provide patient care for a variety of large animal species, including equine, porcine, caprine, and ovine.
- Utilize technical abilities and knowledge acquired through school to perform anesthesia-related techniques, such as IVC placement, intubation, monitoring, medication injection, and recovery.
- Pre and post-operative patient care, instructing and demonstrating techniques to students.
- Maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of the large animal anesthesia office and prep hospital areas.
- Knowledge normally acquired in the first two or three years in college, technical or vocational school in Veterinary Technology.
- Related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in extensive patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterilization.
- Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or attainment of such certification within one year from date of employment.
- Experience as a veterinary technician in an educational setting.
- Experience in extensive patient care, emergency/critical care, surgery, anesthesia, drug-dosing, and sterile techniques.
- Experience in the use of electronic medical records software.
This is a full-time 3rd shift position, working four 10-hour consecutive days with overtime, if necessary. The veterinary technician will be lifting animal patients onto cages and medical equipment, carrying animals between cages and exam tables and gurneys, pushing carts containing animals and equipment to other units, climbing stairs carrying lab samples, restraining animals, preparing for medical procedures and treatments. Lift animals up to 50lbs individually and up to 150lbs as a team.
Potential exposure to animals or specimens with Mycobacterium, work with animals or unfixed tissue, and wear a respirator.
