Alameda, California, United States Pyka Full time

Pyka is seeking a Lead Mechanical Systems Manager to spearhead and nurture a hardware-centric team.

In this pivotal role, you will establish the strategic direction for critical engineering systems. You will take ownership of intricate trade-offs, guiding your team in balancing competing objectives such as cost, performance, manufacturability, and engineering timelines. Collaborating closely with fellow managers and executive leadership, you will prioritize tasks to meet the company's goals. Your oversight will extend to refining and scaling our current products while also driving new product initiatives from initial design to full-scale production. Your success will significantly impact the pace at which society transitions to electric aviation.

At Pyka, we emphasize cultivating a positive workplace culture rooted in collaboration, transparency, and employee satisfaction. We are looking for a Lead Mechanical Systems Manager who embodies these values and is enthusiastic about guiding our hardware-focused teams in a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

This position reports directly to the CEO/CTO.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, mentor, and develop a top-tier team of mechanical engineers, hardware testing engineers, and reliability engineers dedicated to all facets of design and validation of complex hardware (including aircraft structures, propulsion systems, and ground support equipment).
  • Set a positive example by fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Ensure your team possesses the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to design, construct, and test hardware, from product lifecycle management to hardware issue tracking and resolution.
  • Manage intricate and often conflicting priorities, assisting the team in balancing performance, cost, reliability, production, and schedule risks.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with other key leaders within the organization, facilitating project progress, managing conflicting priorities, and anticipating future challenges.
  • Develop and advocate for robust yet efficient design processes.
  • Mentor team members from junior to senior engineering levels.
  • Curate and maintain a concise set of key performance metrics for your team, reporting these metrics to the broader organization in a manner that inspires progress and necessary adjustments.
Required Qualifications:
  • Over 10 years of experience in designing, testing, and deploying complex hardware systems (experience with vehicles is preferred).
  • Proven track record of successfully guiding a complex hardware system from prototype to production (ideally exceeding 100 units per year with a product of similar complexity to our vehicles).
  • Previous experience leading an engineering team in a dynamic R&D/New Product Introduction environment.
  • In-depth understanding of engineering systems and the capability to implement appropriately scaled systems as Pyka evolves.
  • Extensive knowledge of the physics, failure modes, and design methodologies associated with complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to navigate conflicting priorities and achieve alignment across various departments.
  • Value simplicity and efficiency in both design and work processes.
  • Demonstrated principal-level individual contributor capabilities throughout your career.
Company Benefits:
  • Competitive base salary ranging from $190,000 to $220,000 per year, plus equity. Compensation will vary based on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • Employer-sponsored health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible Spending Account with employer matching.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Paid holidays, generous paid time off, and additional unpaid leave options.
  • Voluntary short-term and long-term disability, as well as life insurance.
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits.
  • Complimentary catered lunches and a variety of snacks.
Export Control Requirements:

This position necessitates access to technology, software, and other information subject to governmental access control restrictions due to export controls. Employment in this role is contingent upon the continued availability of government authorization to release such items, including, but not limited to, an export license or other documentation required to establish authorization for access.

Company may delay the start of employment, rescind an offer, terminate employment, and/or modify job responsibilities, compensation, benefits, and/or access to company facilities and information systems as deemed necessary to ensure compliance with applicable government access control restrictions.
