Position Overview

The State of Idaho is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Port-of-Entry Inspector Trainee. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and compliance of commercial vehicles on Idaho's roads. The successful candidate will engage in inspections and enforce regulations that govern commercial vehicle operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough inspections of commercial vehicles to assess size, weight, and safety compliance using both electronic tools and visual assessments.
  • Verify the validity of licenses and permits, ensuring driver qualifications are met, including checking medical cards and logbooks.
  • Issue temporary and oversized permits and manage registrations.
  • Utilize computer systems to verify tax statuses, registrations, and licenses while collecting necessary fees for permits and citations.
  • Handle cash transactions and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Prepare and submit bank deposits in a timely manner.
  • Document violations by issuing warnings or citations and manage fines and bonds accordingly.
  • Provide accurate information regarding road conditions and travel facilities to the public.
  • Work flexible shifts, including weekends, to meet operational needs.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Basic understanding of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Familiarity with Windows or similar operating systems, along with proficiency in word processing and electronic communication.
  • Experience in basic arithmetic operations and the ability to interpret and apply regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports and interact with the public in challenging situations.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Additional Information:

This role requires physical stamina, including the ability to lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds, perform vehicle inspections, and work in various weather conditions. Trainees will receive comprehensive training to enforce laws related to commercial vehicles and will be granted limited peace officer authority.
