About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to work on complex engineering projects, collaborating with a team of professionals to design, develop, and implement solutions that meet the needs of the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop engineering projects, including drafting and reviewing plans, determining right-of-way requirements, and preparing construction estimates and technical studies.
  • Manage the design, review, and approval of capital improvement projects, coordinating with in-house staff and consultants.
  • Investigate problems and design improvements for plans and specifications for major public works projects, and develop new procedures and criteria for correcting operational deficiencies.
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment to perform GIS work and computer-aided drafting and design of engineering drawings, plans, and projects.
  • Collect, compute, and evaluate technical data for the operation of county-wide or county/city-wide utilities distribution systems, using computer software to reproduce or represent phenomena likely to occur in actual performance.
  • Conduct field investigations to determine the availability and adequacy of existing public utilities and roadways relative to proposed county projects, analyzing and preparing complex engineering construction drawings.
  • Prepare estimates of the cost and quantity of materials required for complex construction projects, and prepare detailed statistical reports based on results from analyzer studies.
  • Participate in meetings with professional engineers, architects, and consulting agencies, and perform technical reviews and approvals of construction plans for private residences and commercial projects.
  • Advise property owners, builders, developers, attorneys, and others concerning construction practices and code requirements, coordinating field changes with architects, engineers, and building inspectors.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and records as necessary.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, plus ten years of subprofessional engineering experience, or a certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Maryland.
  • Knowledge of drafting materials, instruments, and techniques, mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and the use of logarithms, land surveys, deeds, plats, and construction drawings, and the principles and practices of engineering design work.
  • Skill in performing drafting, computational, and design work, solving mathematical, design, and drafting problems, preparing and analyzing engineering drawings, plans, and specifications, conducting field investigations, and preparing technical and statistical reports.
  • Ability to lead and instruct others, establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public, operate computers and peripheral equipment to perform drafting and design work and conduct engineering studies, and manage capital improvement projects.
