The Flight Operations Team at Calspan operates a comprehensive flight testing organization, equipped with a modern 80,000 sq. ft. hangar facility. Our dedicated team of experimental test pilots, engineers, mechanics, and technicians is committed to transforming customer concepts into reality through our fleet of jet-powered airborne test beds.

We are in search of a seasoned Senior Mechanical Engineer to spearhead the design and validation of aircraft modifications and installations that support cutting-edge flight research initiatives utilizing Calspan's fleet of experimental aircraft. This role encompasses planning and executing ground and flight-testing activities for prototype flight hardware, ensuring safe operations while providing technical guidance to flight test program teams and the broader mechanical engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and fabrication efforts for prototype test articles and unique aircraft modifications, including cabin alterations for test equipment integration and structural modifications to accommodate externally mounted test articles.
  • Independently manage the mechanical development of component and assembly designs, ensuring proper documentation for FAA airworthiness approval. Utilize advanced 2D and 3D CAD tools to create detailed models and drawings.
  • Formulate and implement strategies to achieve airworthiness approval for aircraft modifications, employing various analysis methods.
  • Provide engineering leadership in the maintenance and advancement of Calspan's fleet of experimental aircraft, including the electrohydraulic FBW flight control system.
  • Mentor junior engineers in mechanical design principles to facilitate the integration of prototype test articles with Calspan's aircraft.

Qualifications:

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 9 years of demonstrated experience in the design and analysis of structural components, ideally within aircraft structures or mechanical systems.
  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to the above.

Security Clearance: Candidates must hold or be eligible for a US government security clearance.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in 2D and 3D CAD software, preferably NX.
  • Experience with finite element analysis and classical structural analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic system and component design.
  • Leadership and mentoring experience within engineering teams.
  • Understanding of engineering design process principles.
