Position Overview
The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides comprehensive patient care, education, and support within a specialized clinic environment. This role acts as a clinical and community resource, educator, and consultant, capable of coordinating and delivering care based on detailed treatment protocols established by physicians, without the necessity for direct supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivers direct patient care in an outpatient specialty clinic, maintaining an advanced understanding of diagnoses, medications, and treatment modalities pertinent to the specialty. Collaborates with physicians to assess the effectiveness of care.
- Acts as the primary liaison for patients and their families, which may include being available for 24-hour on-call support. Utilizes critical thinking and advanced knowledge to manage most concerns independently while involving physicians when necessary.
- Evaluates the current patient population and incoming referrals, prioritizing the scheduling of appointments and tests in consultation with physicians. Communicates any changes in scheduling to the medical team.
- Assists with in-office procedures, ensuring patient comfort and safety before, during, and after the intervention.
- Identifies the educational needs of patients and families, collaborating with team members and community resources to meet these objectives. Develops and maintains educational materials that encourage adherence to treatment plans.
- Takes responsibility for patient safety by ensuring a secure environment and conducting regular safety rounds to uphold patient care standards.
- Leads the development and implementation of orientation programs for new staff in the specialty area, ensuring they are equipped to provide safe and effective care. May establish competencies for the specialty and assess staff proficiency annually.
- Collaborates with team members to design, develop, and implement educational initiatives and seminars within the community and Prisma Health. Serves as a resource for colleagues and other healthcare staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Regularly evaluates personal nursing practice against professional standards, guidelines, state regulations, and current knowledge. Maintains competency through ongoing education and professional development, reflecting on strengths and areas for improvement.
- Seeks to understand the costs associated with clinical supplies and the allocation of personnel resources to enhance cost-effective outcomes.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not include management responsibilities and will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
Qualifications
Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
Minimum of 1 year of clinical nursing experience in the specialty area.
Licensure and Certifications
Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
Alternative Experience
In lieu of 1 year of registered nurse experience, 1 year of licensed practical nurse (LPN) experience will be accepted.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in the specialty area is preferred.
