Position Overview
The Land Surveying Technician operates under the guidance of a Registered Professional Land Surveyor. This role involves processing field survey data files for a variety of survey projects, including boundary surveys, construction surveys, topographic surveys, and as-built surveys, along with various data management tasks such as coordinate conversions and adjustments. Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble GNSS, and conventional surveying instruments is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Process field survey data files utilizing project-specific feature codes and attributes through Trimble Business Center (TBC) software, and export data into multiple formats, including AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcView, Excel spreadsheets, and standard CSV files.
- Monitor daily project progress and maintain a comprehensive log of data files submitted by survey field teams.
- Collaborate with the Field Survey Party Chief and Supervisors to identify any omissions or deficiencies in survey data files.
- Draft technical correspondence and generate detailed reports regarding field survey progress and data integrity as needed.
- Create plans, maps, files, and charts as required.
- Engage with the VP of Survey, Directors of Survey, Survey Supervisors, and/or Survey Managers throughout the planning, execution, and completion of survey projects to ensure that tasks meet or exceed project specifications.
- Ensure compliance with company and project standards related to both conventional and GPS survey methodologies.
- Utilize knowledge of pipeline surveying, construction, and operations to accurately locate, observe, identify, and monument relevant features according to company and project specifications.
- Adhere to and enforce company policies and procedural standards.
Additional Skills and Qualifications
- Proven ability to implement effective project management principles.
- Ability to represent the company in a professional manner.
- Experience in significant projects as a Survey Technician is preferred.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Willingness to travel based on project requirements.
- Good physical condition and stamina.
- Proficient in computer usage and Windows applications.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook).
- Solid understanding of pipeline route selection, surveying, construction, and operations/maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, topographic maps, tax/parcel maps, plats, and deed descriptions.
- Manage and maintain 811 locate tickets.
- Strong working knowledge of both conventional and survey/mapping-grade GPS survey equipment and techniques.
- Perform additional tasks as directed by the VP of Survey and/or Directors of Survey.
Experience Requirements
- A minimum of three years' experience in processing survey data, including topographic, boundary surveys, ALTA surveys, platting, and construction staking.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Trimble GNSS, and conventional surveying instruments.
- Preferred operational experience with industry-standard equipment and software platforms, including:
Trimble R12 GNSS GPS systems
Trimble GeoXH GPS systems
Topcon and Nikon total stations
Trimble TSC7 data collectors
Trimble Business Center (TBC) software
Educational Background
Survey technicians typically possess some form of college education. Many complete associate's degrees or certificate programs in survey technology, focusing on professional land surveying techniques. Students gain knowledge in field surveying practices, survey reduction, field and office procedures, and the use of various instruments and equipment. Many survey technicians also pursue voluntary professional certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors to enhance their competitiveness in the field.
