Aircraft Maintenance Specialist Job Description

This position is for an Aircraft Maintenance Specialist at Army National Guard Units. The primary purpose is to inspect, repair, modify, and service aircraft systems, components, and assemblies, both on- and off-aircraft.



Responsibilities


  • Perform inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on aircraft, including periodic, phase, hourly, preflight, postflight, calendar, thru-flight, and special inspections.
  • Inspect and perform functional checks on hydraulic, electrical, pressurization, lubrication, de-icing, vacuum, induction, and exhaust systems, including landing gear retraction and operation checks.
  • Install equipment, such as external tanks, tow reels, hoists, and pylons.
  • Troubleshoot and perform unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft, utilizing various gauges, meters, measuring devices, and other related test equipment.
  • Perform major adjustments and alignments of aircraft systems or components and assist specialists as required.
  • Service oil, fluid, fuel, hydraulic, and oxygen systems.
  • Adjust and maintain installed equipment, such as tow targets, hydraulic reels, and drive assemblies.
  • Remove and replace working or inoperative parts and elements.
  • Perform operator maintenance on aircraft-installed auxiliary power units.
  • Tow, taxi, park, and moor assigned and transient aircraft.
  • Meet and debrief aircrew on the status of the aircraft.
  • Launch and recover assigned and transient aircraft, including those on alert status.
  • Perform end-of-runway inspections prior to take-off.


Requirements

This position requires 6 months of experience or training in the use of common hand tools in making repetitive mechanical repairs under close supervision for WG-5/8 positions, 12 months for WG-08 positions, and 18 months for WG-10 positions.



The ability to instruct lower-graded mechanics, military, and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash-damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls is also required.



Additional requirements include the ability to perform user and organizational level maintenance on assigned support equipment, including inspection, repair, modification, and corrosion prevention.



The selected candidate will be responsible for providing data for aircraft maintenance historical records, completing maintenance data collection, man-hour accounting, and other forms as required.



They will also assist the aircraft maintenance supply function in identifying parts and stock numbers and obtaining necessary parts and tools to perform assigned duties.



Furthermore, the candidate will instruct, direct, and assign maintenance repair tasks to drill status guard members, observe work, and ensure compliance with standard procedures and applicable technical publications.



Finally, they will comply with safety, fire, security, and housekeeping regulations, ensuring that material and equipment are properly stored, protected, maintained, and secured.
