PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

Volunteers of America is a federally and state-funded comprehensive early childhood education initiative focused on holistic child development, emphasizing cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional growth. The program actively engages families in all aspects of a child's development and offers extensive resources to low-income families concerning health, nutrition, and community support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the guidance of the Child Development Coordinator, the Early Childhood Education Specialist is responsible for creating a safe and nurturing learning environment for children aged 2-5 years. Utilizing play-based learning strategies, the specialist promotes social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Responsibilities include planning individual and group activities tailored to children's ages and developmental stages, in accordance with the Creative Curriculum. The specialist also engages parents in educational activities to enhance their role in their child's learning journey, providing support to increase their understanding of child development.

Responsibilities Include:

Ensuring Classroom Safety

- Develop and implement safety plans for children in both indoor and outdoor settings.
- Conduct daily health and safety inspections, reporting any necessary repairs or maintenance.
- Supervise children's activities to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Recognize and report any accidents, illnesses, or suspected child abuse as per established protocols.
- Maintain a clean and organized classroom environment.

Implementing Effective Teaching Practices

- Design and conduct activities that promote healthy habits suitable for young children.
- Select and utilize materials that stimulate children's development.
- Incorporate culturally relevant materials into the curriculum.
- Plan daily learning experiences based on children's interests, aligned with the Creative Curriculum to support school readiness.
- Maintain accurate records and assessments of child development.
- Collaborate with parents to create individualized development plans for each child.
- Assist with toileting needs and promote healthy habits among children.
- Conduct regular parent-teacher conferences to discuss child progress.
- Attend required training sessions and workshops.
- Ensure compliance with agency procedures and maintain confidentiality of records.

Engaging Families and the Community

- Actively participate in recruitment and enrollment activities.
- Encourage parental involvement in center activities and provide opportunities for parents to contribute their skills.
- Facilitate parent education meetings covering various topics related to child development and parenting.

Program Responsibilities

- Attend scheduled trainings and meetings.
- Complete special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to the Agency Code of Conduct and relevant laws.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

Education:
- Associate of Arts (AA) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field is preferred.
- Completion of at least 12 core units in Early Childhood Education is required.

Experience:
- Minimum of two years of experience in a classroom or group setting with infants, toddlers, or preschoolers.

Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to implement effective curriculum and utilize assessment data.
- Promote children's development in line with early learning standards.
- Foster children's intellectual and physical growth, preparing them for school.
- Create a healthy learning environment.
- Support children's social and emotional development.
- Encourage family involvement in the preschool program.
- Knowledge of safety protocols in childcare settings.
- Effective communication skills with children, parents, and staff.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position.

Licenses/Permits/Certifications:
- California Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher.
- Certification as a Mandated Reporter in California.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

- A medical examination and required immunizations must be submitted.
- Fingerprint clearances from relevant authorities are mandatory.
- Must have access to reliable transportation and a valid California driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
