Job Summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Diesel Truck and Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team. As a key member of our equipment team, you will be responsible for promoting and practicing safe work habits while performing diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and rebuilding tasks on light, heavy-duty, and diesel trucks, and diverse road construction/maintenance equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair differentials, transmissions, A/C, pneumatic, and electrical systems
  • Perform heating, cutting, welding, and fabrication of components
  • Prepare daily time cards with charges and description of tasks performed, and maintain records according to established guidelines
  • Operate various types of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, equipment, and tools in a safe manner
  • Independently perform major repairs and maintenance using hand and power tools on diverse diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment
  • Use computers and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic testing equipment
  • Read, comprehend, and apply information from service and equipment repair manuals, gauges, and testing devices
  • Follow verbal and written instructions, and record and maintain detailed work orders and service records in computer system

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of automotive, construction, and maintenance equipment
  • Ability to operate various types of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks, equipment, and tools in a safe manner
  • Ability to independently perform major repairs and maintenance using hand and power tools on diverse diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment
  • Ability to use computers and advanced electronic and computerized diagnostic testing equipment
  • Knowledge of welding, cutting, and fabrication operations
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from service and equipment repair manuals, gauges, and testing devices
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, and record and maintain detailed work orders and service records in computer system
  • Ability to obtain CDL within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • Ability to obtain VA State Vehicle Inspection License within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter
  • Valid Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing diesel truck, agriculture, and/or construction equipment
  • Experience in the diagnosis and repair of equipment systems such as: electrical, fuel, hydraulic, HVAC
  • ASE certifications
  • Current VA State Vehicle Inspection License
  • CDL

Working Conditions

The selected candidate must be able to perform heavy manual labor, including standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 30 lbs. The position requires approved safety shoes.
