Position Overview
Under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Nursing Assistant plays a vital role in providing comprehensive patient care. This includes assisting with personal care tasks such as feeding, bathing, dressing, grooming, and safely moving patients. The Nursing Assistant is also responsible for collecting and documenting vital signs and other important patient observations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists with personal care tasks as directed, ensuring adherence to established protocols. Responds promptly to patient call lights for all patients. Distributes water, snacks, and meal trays while providing assistance as needed.
- Aids patients with grooming and hygiene, ensuring skin integrity and comfort. Supports ambulation, transfers, positioning, and range of motion exercises in accordance with patient care plans.
- Implements fall prevention strategies as outlined in care plans. Collects and preserves specimens for testing. Aids the RN during patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and post-mortem care.
- Observes and documents patient health status data as assigned, including vital signs and other measurements. Reports any abnormal findings to the RN immediately and maintains accurate documentation.
- Contributes to a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Utilizes proper body mechanics and equipment during patient handling to prevent injury. Reports any environmental hazards or equipment issues to the supervisor.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old, or 17 years old with a high school diploma or GED.
- Must have completed one of the following: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program, one semester of clinical rotations in an accredited nursing program, Allina Health Nursing Assistant Academy Program, or possess prior direct patient care experience.
Licenses/Certifications
- Must hold one of the following certifications: Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association, Current BLS certification from the American Red Cross, or complete Allina in-house BLS training within 30 days of hire.
Physical Requirements
- Medium Work: Capable of lifting weights up to 32 lbs. occasionally and up to 25 lbs. frequently, in accordance with Allina Safe Patient Moving Policy.
