Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced HVAC Installation and Repair Technician Lead to join our team at Christopher Newport University. As a key member of our Facilities Management department, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating the daily work activities of our HVAC technicians, while providing hands-on participation in the installation, operation, and maintenance of our heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate the daily work activities of HVAC technicians
  • Provide hands-on participation in the installation, operation, and maintenance of HVAC equipment and systems
  • Operate energy management systems
  • Assist in the setup of preventative maintenance programs and ensure completion within designated timeframes
  • Perform all work in a professional, conscientious, and safe manner
  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment through repair and maintenance of all HVAC equipment
  • Procure materials and supplies using small purchase credit card and eVA
  • Maintain records for purchases and track inventory
  • Schedule and provide quality assurance of work performed by outside contractors
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring process by reviewing and screening applications, interviewing potential new HVAC technicians, and making recommendations to hire
  • Assist in the training of Facilities Management procedures, practices, paperwork, and properly maintaining carts and vehicles
  • Assist in the technical training of University Maintenance Staff
  • Present safety topics
  • Perform supervisory functions in the absence of the Supervisor
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent education/experience that equates to a high school diploma
  • Active Journeyman HVAC license
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant recovery certification
  • Experience in HVAC trade at the Journeyman level
  • Associates degree or higher
  • Active Master HVAC license
  • Energy management system vendor certifications
  • Specialized experience and training with complex HVAC systems and energy management control systems
  • Experience in the use of a computerized maintenance management system that supports work order management and preventative maintenance programs
