The Maternal-Fetal Ultrasound Specialist is tasked with executing a range of specialized technical functions in Diagnostic Ultrasound, employing high-frequency sound waves to aid medical professionals in identifying anatomical irregularities.
Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Maternal-Fetal Ultrasound Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
1. Conducting procedures in accordance with departmental protocols, ensuring exams are completed within designated timeframes. 2.
Performing essential clerical tasks, including utilizing the ASOBGYN reporting system, managing Epic patient scheduling, and other relevant computer systems as required by the Medical Center.
3. Executing portable ultrasound examinations when necessary. 4.Carrying out a variety of intricate technical tasks in Diagnostic Ultrasound, using high-frequency sound waves to identify anatomical anomalies such as masses, abscesses, and stones, in line with established sonographic protocols; assisting physicians with biopsy procedures and color-flow ultrasound as needed.
5. Organizing, preparing, and setting up medical supplies, instruments, and equipment. 6. Preparing patients for diagnostic evaluations, positioning them for optimal anatomical views, and explaining procedures clearly. 7. Assessing the technical quality of images to ensure representative captures of pathological conditions; processing images in accordance with standard practices. 8.Maintaining ultrasound records, archiving and de-archiving data as necessary; calculating, compiling, and documenting data from numerical readings on patient charts and related records.
9.Calibrating, cleaning, and performing routine maintenance on equipment to guarantee proper functionality; sterilizing instruments, supplies, and equipment; restocking and replenishing supplies as needed.
10. Offering technical guidance and training to students, new hires, medical residents, and medical students. 11.Recognizing the specific needs of the patient population served and tailoring care accordingly (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visual impairments, etc.).
This includes effective communication with patients, parents, and/or primary caregivers at their appropriate developmental and educational levels.
Essential Position Specific Functions:
1.
Conducting Anatomy and Physiology examinations of fetuses across all gestational stages, including Level II scans, 3D scans, Detailed Fetal Cardiac Anatomy scans, Transvaginal scans, and Doppler BPP, Growth, and Nuchal translucency studies.
2. Assisting in procedures such as Amniocentesis, Chorionic Villus Sampling, and fetal reductions. 3. Performing Gynecological Ultrasound examinations.Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities Required: 1. Graduate of an accredited Ultrasound program.
2. 2 years of training in Allied Health/College.
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience in OB/GYN ultrasound.
- Proficient knowledge of ultrasound equipment, its functions, and operational controls.
- Understanding of equipment and computer systems, including service procedures.
- Familiarity with cross-sectional anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of safety, infection control, and emergency procedures, including patient care protocols in crisis situations.
- Willingness to participate in weekend rotations (approximately once every six weeks).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Expertise in assisting with invasive fetal procedures alongside MFM specialists.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
1. Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certification.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:
1. Nuchal Translucency Certification.
