As a postdoctoral appointee, you'll play a crucial role in advancing the field of radiation detection and characterization. You'll work closely with our multidisciplinary team to design and execute complex experiments, develop innovative radiation detectors, and propose new tests to enhance our understanding of fast radiation environments.
This position involves work in both office and laboratory settings, including radiation and contamination areas. You'll be responsible for hands-on experimental work, writing proposals for research projects and facility access, disseminating research findings at technical conferences and in scholarly papers, and conducting radiation transport modeling, designing circuits and detectors, and performing data analysis.

What You'll Do
As a Senior Research Scientist in our Applied Nuclear Technologies department, you'll be responsible for:
- Designing and executing complex experiments to advance the field of radiation detection and characterization
- Developing innovative radiation detectors and proposing new tests to enhance our understanding of fast radiation environments
- Collaborating with our multidisciplinary team to achieve research goals
- Writing proposals for research projects and facility access
- Disseminating research findings at technical conferences and in scholarly papers
- Conducting radiation transport modeling, designing circuits and detectors, and performing data analysis
What We Require
To be successful in this role, you'll need:
- A PhD in Physics, Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field conferred within five years prior to employment
- Data analysis experience
- The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-clearance
What We Desire
We're looking for candidates with experience in:
- Laboratory testing, electronic instrumentation, and test operations
- Radiation detection
- Publishing in reviewed journals
- Experience with semiconductor radiation detectors
- Outstanding communication skills, a willingness to work in a collaborative team environment, and demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research
- Experience with simulation software such as Geant or MCNP
About Our Team
The Applied Nuclear Technologies department is part of the Radiation & Electrical Sciences Center, where we explore, develop, and apply physics and engineering principles to many areas of nuclear and radiation technology. We're a multidisciplinary team that collaborates with partners to conduct experiments in diverse radiation environments.
Salary
The estimated salary for this position is $120,000 - $160,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.

Security Clearance
Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Essential Functions
If offered the position, you may be required to demonstrate your fitness to perform certain physical aspects of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
