Key Responsibilities of the Medication Technician:
The Medication Technician's primary duties include:
- Administering or assisting with the administration and/or supervision of medications to residents in a safe, precise, and timely manner, in accordance with state regulations.
- Providing both physical and emotional support to residents, ensuring their dignity, choice, and individuality are upheld.
Core Functions:
- Administers or oversees medication administration as per physician orders documented in the medication administration record (MAR).
- Records administered medications on the MAR following company policies; verifies MARs immediately after administration and before the end of the shift for accuracy.
- Conducts shift change reports with incoming and outgoing staff.
- Ensures the security of the medication cart and narcotic keys throughout the shift; performs narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each shift in line with company protocols.
- Assists residents with daily living activities, including bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, toileting, eating, and mobility.
- Collaborates effectively with colleagues and other team members.
- Maintains a professional demeanor in all interactions with residents and their families.
- Reports any suspected or observed instances of abuse to licensed staff immediately.
- Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
- Observes and communicates changes in residents' physical and emotional states to the Wellness Director or charge nurse as necessary.
- Assists residents who do not have swallowing difficulties with their meals.
- Responds to emergencies promptly and calmly, reporting incidents to the charge nurse and/or Wellness Director.
- Follows established infection control procedures and safety regulations, including CDC guidelines.
- Ensures cleanliness in residents' rooms and reports any safety or sanitation violations to the supervisor.
- Documents services provided on company forms.
- Operates necessary medical equipment and office devices.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Provides comprehensive care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness associates as needed.
- Engages in resident-centered activities and supports the activities program.
- Maintains sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
- Performs light housekeeping tasks as required.
- Assists residents with personal correspondence and communication when requested.
- Conducts regular room checks and rounds.
- Monitors for potential safety hazards in the environment.
- Participates in dining-related tasks, including escorting residents and assisting with meal service.
- Attends staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
- Employs tactful communication in sensitive situations.
- Follows up on reported concerns or complaints appropriately.
- Acts as a representative of Beach House to guests and visitors.
- Demonstrates respect for the heritage and values of residents, understanding the aging process.
- Collaborates with other departments to ensure comprehensive care.
- Participates in assigned projects or committees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Completion of state-required education and certification for medication aides, along with the company’s competency checklist.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Good physical health, free from communicable diseases; ability to lift, bend, and maneuver medication carts as needed.
- Capability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Successful completion of drug testing and background checks as required.
- Experience in Assisted Living settings is preferred.
