Job Title: Public Safety Officer I

Job Summary:

The City of Sunnyvale, CA is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Public Safety Officer I to join our team. As a Public Safety Officer I, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of public safety work, including law enforcement, crime prevention, fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patrol assigned areas and preserve law and order through the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws.
  • Respond to calls for service involving traffic accidents, robberies, disturbances, and other misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Investigate crimes against property and persons, including crime scene investigation, evidence collection, and suspect interrogation.
  • Perform duties related to crime prevention and the correction of public hazards.
  • Provide testimony in court related to assigned duties.
  • Prepare and maintain investigative records.
  • Enforce traffic laws through observation, use of radar, traffic checkpoints, and DUI suspicion stops.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and take appropriate enforcement action.
  • Participate in raids and perform public education activities, such as making presentations and providing demonstrations.
  • Provide on-the-job training and evaluations for Public Safety Officers I and veteran Public Safety Officers II in new assignments.

Requirements:

  • Associate's degree or 60 semester units or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university.
  • Two years of experience in police work.
  • Successful completion of a POST approved police academy.
  • Valid class C California driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Current California POST Basic Certificate.
  • Physical health, strength, and agility necessary to meet the physical demands of police and fire work, as determined by a physical agility exam and a medical exam.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice or related field.

Working Conditions:

The position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision, acute hearing, and the ability to lift, drag, and push equipment and bodies weighing up to 165 pounds.
