Job Summary

Windwalker Group is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Counselor with a specialization in substance abuse to support military personnel at the Vermont Army National Guard.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide mental health counseling services, focusing on substance use/misuse/abuse and suicidal ideations.
  • Support a 24/7 crisis hotline, offering assistance through calls and texts for Soldiers and their family members.
  • Conduct mental status exams and other mental health evaluations.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings to stay informed and contribute to a collaborative work environment.
  • Navigate complex military health systems, support programs, and legal systems to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Facilitate Behavioral Health briefs for units of varying sizes, including groups of 20-60 Soldiers and larger audiences of Soldiers and Family Members pre- and post-deployment.
  • Advise unit leadership on situations involving Soldiers' mental health and fitness for duty.
  • Collaborate with community-based counselors in navigating military requirements related to mental health issues.
  • Provide group therapy sessions after critical incidents, such as the death or serious injury of a unit member.
  • Assist Soldiers and Family Members in finding community-based counselors and maintain relationships with clinicians to expedite the process.
Requirements
  • Masters degree in counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Vermont State licensure as a Mental Health Counselor or Substance Abuse Counselor.
  • Strong knowledge of substance abuse treatment modalities.
  • Excellent Communication and Interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of evidence-based practices related to suicidal ideations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with military personnel, understanding military culture, or working on a military base.
  • Familiarity with military deployment requirements and mental health regulations.
  • Training in crisis intervention and trauma-focused therapy.
