Key Responsibilities and Qualifications

The NICU Nursing Unit Leader is accountable for overseeing, coordinating, and assessing the nursing care delivered within the unit. This role includes:

  • Engaging in performance improvement initiatives within the hospital or department.
  • Recruiting and onboarding nursing personnel.
  • Creating and managing staff schedules.
  • Advocating for nursing staff interests.
  • Serving as a clinical resource for the nursing unit.
  • Assessing staff performance and providing feedback.
  • Managing disciplinary actions and fostering staff development.
  • Participating in the financial oversight of the unit.
  • Assisting in budget planning for the unit.
  • Organizing and leading staff meetings.
  • Coordinating in-service training related to unit operations.
  • Ensuring compliance with age-specific care standards.
  • Maintaining 24-hour accountability for unit operations and services.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvements within the department.
Required Qualifications

Licensure/Certification/Registration:

  • Valid RN license in Texas or a Compact State.
  • BLS certification from an approved provider.
  • STABLE certification within six months of hire.
  • NRP certification within six months of hire.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or a related field is required.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • Proven clinical expertise relevant to the assigned area.
  • Prior management experience or demonstrated leadership capabilities.
