Position Overview:

The Tissue Processing Specialist is responsible for the meticulous preparation of histologic slides derived from human tissue samples, facilitating microscopic analysis and diagnosis by a Pathologist.

Key Responsibilities:

(25%)* Execute the preparation of human tissue sections for microscopic assessment and patient diagnosis. This includes:

  • Grossing (dissecting tissue)
  • Embedding (orienting specimens in paraffin blocks)
  • Sectioning (cutting thin tissue slices)
  • Staining (enhancing tissue contrast and highlighting specific features using standard hematoxylin and eosin stains)
  • Mounting (adhering tissue onto glass slides)

(25%)* Ensure the upkeep of laboratory equipment, maintaining a log of all routine maintenance and quality control measures performed.

(25%)* Operate, clean, and sterilize laboratory instruments, glassware, and workstations to uphold a safe and efficient working environment.

Certifications and Licensure:

  • HT: Histotechnician
    • Equivalent Experience: Candidates must be HT certified or eligible for Board of Certification (BOC) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), with certification to be obtained within six months of employment.

Educational Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED is required.

Experience, Training, and Skills:

Completion of a Histology program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or a minimum of one year of experience as a Histology Technician Trainee, demonstrating competence in:

  • Embedding
  • Microtomy
  • Grossing
  • Special stains
  • Immunohistochemistry

Proficiency in using various laboratory equipment and tools, including but not limited to:

  • Computers and information systems
  • Scanners
  • Forceps
  • Tissue dyes
  • Microtomes
  • Cryostats
  • Slide racks
  • Tissue processors
  • Automatic stainers

Knowledge Requirements:

Familiarity with CLIA regulations concerning proficiency testing, quality assurance, and quality control is essential. Additionally, knowledge of laboratory policies, procedures, and medical terminology is crucial for effective communication with laboratory personnel.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

Ability to manage stressful situations, including those involving public interaction and sensitive circumstances. Candidates must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment and should be able to move freely within the facility. The role requires:

  • Overall vision and hearing capabilities
  • Frequent sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods
  • Occasional lifting of 11-20 lbs
  • Handling multiple tasks and maintaining regular attendance

Overall dexterity is necessary, including the ability to handle, reach, grasp, and perform repetitive movements as required.
