Job Overview

GENERAL PURPOSE

The City Maintenance Crew Member operates under the guidance of the Crew Leader, who delegates significant tasks and responsibilities. This role involves performing routine physical labor to maintain municipal streets and public areas, which includes activities such as cleaning streets, collecting and disposing of trash, sweeping roads, maintaining sidewalks, and ensuring the upkeep of parks and open spaces.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Reports directly to the Crew Leader.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Demonstrates independence and sound judgment in executing assigned tasks.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following tasks are part of the role, but not limited to:

  • Collaborates with the maintenance team to clear streets, parks, and public areas of debris.
  • Manages vegetation by mowing grass, applying pesticides, and trimming shrubs and trees along public rights-of-way.
  • Plants, waters, and maintains landscaped sections.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and maintenance of City-owned drainage systems, including the removal of debris from catch basins.
  • Acts as a flagger to direct traffic and safeguard crew members when necessary; sets up and removes traffic cones after work.
  • Utilizes various tools, including jackhammers, lawn mowers, weed-eaters, and hand tools for maintenance tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Familiarity with methods, materials, practices, and equipment used in public works maintenance. Experience in working safely and effectively with field personnel or independently as tasks require. Understanding of water irrigation systems and safety regulations. Mechanical aptitude for operating public works equipment. Capability to perform physically demanding work.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid Texas State driver's license with a clean driving record is required. Must obtain and maintain a Pesticide Applicator License within six months of employment. Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with both internal and external customers.


TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Utilizes personal computers, including word processing and spreadsheet software, along with various landscaping and maintenance tools.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
