Role Overview:

The Licensed School Nurse plays a crucial role in promoting student health and well-being within the educational environment. This position involves a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring compliance with health regulations and providing support to students with special health needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure adherence to health regulations, including obtaining Parent Consent and explaining the necessary components to staff and families.
  • Conduct training sessions for new special education personnel regarding the processes and documentation involved in health care plans.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff to provide guidance and training to health professionals and paraprofessionals.
  • Advocate for necessary strategies to be included in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) concerning health services and support needs.
  • Oversee the timely initiation of tracking for students qualifying for health services, collaborating with qualified professionals to develop and review care plans.
  • Provide ongoing training and support to health professionals to ensure compliance with health service requirements.
  • Manage the health care needs of students with special conditions through assessment, planning, and evaluation, while communicating health findings to educational staff.
  • Participate in IEP meetings for students with health-related concerns, offering direct and indirect health services as needed.
  • Develop and implement Individual Health Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Health Plans (EHPs) for students requiring special accommodations.
  • Perform skilled nursing tasks and delegate appropriate care procedures while ensuring proper training and supervision.
  • Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with state regulations, including immunization and health assessments.
  • Delegate responsibilities to health paraprofessionals and provide necessary supervision.
  • Follow guidelines for reporting communicable diseases and informing relevant parties.
  • Plan, evaluate, and reassess interventions for students with chronic or acute health conditions within the educational setting.

Specific Duties:

  • Develop Individual Health Plans, Emergency Care Plans, and 504 Plans as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with the special education team to facilitate student success, including attending relevant meetings and providing training to support staff.
  • Interpret health information to inform educational planning for students.

Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Public Health Nurse (PHN) or Licensed School Nurse (LSN) at the elementary or secondary level, with a preference for strong nursing skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective interaction with colleagues and the public.
  • Experience working with medically dependent and complex students and their families.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of special education processes and practices is preferred.
