Job Overview

CEMETERY MAINTENANCE WORKER

DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION

SALARY: $16.68 per hour

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Seasonal (approximately 6 months, 40 hours per week) or Part-Time (approximately 30 hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the guidance of the Cemetery Sexton, the Cemetery Maintenance Worker is responsible for executing a range of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks within park environments or similar facilities. This role encompasses various responsibilities as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform daily upkeep of city parks and grounds, including turf management, flower and shrub care, tree maintenance, and general cleaning/trash collection.
  • Conduct minor adjustments to irrigation systems, including the installation and repair of broken lines and sprinkler heads.
  • Utilize hand and power tools such as shovels, rakes, mowers, tractors, and other equipment essential for park maintenance.
  • Carry out simple repairs on equipment and structures as needed.
  • Respond to tasks assigned by the lead worker and supervisor, often working during weekends and holidays.
  • Transport city parade floats to designated locations as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in park maintenance or a related field, with exposure to horticulture or landscape upkeep.
  • Understanding of plant care, pest management, and landscape maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the public.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient in safely operating various maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Engagement with outdoor environments, including exposure to varying weather conditions and physical demands.
  • Regular interaction with other staff members and occasional solitary work.
  • Physical requirements include standing, kneeling, lifting up to 45 pounds, and performing various manual tasks.
  • Constant attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
