Job Title: Urban Planner II

Join the City of Atlanta as an Urban Planner II and contribute to the development of plans and programs for the city's land use. This role involves creating communities, accommodating growth, and revitalizing physical facilities.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare data and staff reports related to zoning cases and text amendments.
  • Work with the Strategic Planning Division to develop and complete the Comprehensive Development Plan.
  • Attend meetings such as the Neighborhood Planning Unit (NPU) meetings and Atlanta Planning Advisory Board meetings.
  • Prepare staff reports for land use amendments.
  • Assist the Secretary of the Board of Zoning Adjustments.
  • Accept applications and questions from customers while serving as the Planner on Duty monthly.
  • Develop planning studies and reports in support of new and updated plans, programs, and regulations.
  • Review or assist in the review of moderately difficult development proposals and site plans for conformance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports on development proposals to government bodies.
  • Collect a variety of statistical data and prepare reports and maps on topics such as census information, land use, tax base data, and occupancy rates.
  • Develop and maintain a statistical reporting system; compile, analyze, and interpret data to define environmental conditions, social, economic, and housing trends, community needs, and zoning problems.
  • Act as liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans. Coordinate community review of public and private development projects.
  • Provide information to the public regarding development regulations.
  • Assist in resolving citizen and customer issues. Conduct field evaluations and assessments.
  • Maintain planning documents, planning and development codes, and related regulations for research, documentation, and public access.
  • Maintain land use and development data in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and use GIS to analyze land uses and prepare maps, graphics, reports, and related documents.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in urban planning, engineering, public administration, public policy, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience drafting staff reports for applications for variances, special exceptions, rezoning, and special use permits.
  • 3 years of related experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in urban planning, urban design, engineering, architecture, public administration, public policy, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in municipal planning preferred (equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid Georgia driver's license.
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification (preferred).
  • Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP), Section 106 certification (preferred).
