Expeditions Educational Support Specialist
This role is a full-time, hourly position designed for a 10-month academic cycle.
Summit Public Schools is seeking Expeditions Educational Support Specialists to assist students in our Expeditions program. The specialist will provide support to a classroom of middle or high school learners engaged in various self-directed and collaborative activities, offering coaching, encouragement, and guidance.
Students express a desire for increased agency and flexibility, high-interest and quality options, comprehensive attention to their holistic needs, and a strategic approach to preparing them for diverse college and career pathways. During the Expeditions period, students participate in experiences, activities, or coursework that connect them with the local and global community beyond the classroom. Examples include community service projects with local organizations, online college courses, or collaborative explorations of specific fields. The Expeditions Educational Support Specialist will collaborate with the Dean of Expeditions to facilitate these enriching experiences.
Positions are available across all Summit Public Schools campuses. Some roles may involve responsibilities at nearby school sites in addition to the primary location.
Additionally, the Expeditions Educational Support Specialist will serve as a site-based substitute during periods when they are not actively supporting Expeditions.

Key Responsibilities:
This position will act as an in-person mentor and proctor for students participating in Summit Expeditions Experiences.
Classroom Management
- Supervise students during virtual, independent, and group learning sessions.
- Monitor and track student attendance, intervening as necessary.
- Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and effective learning environment.
- Foster a positive atmosphere that engages and motivates students.
- Encourage active participation in projects and online work.
- Address minor technical issues as they arise.
Student and Community Engagement
- Build strong relationships with students, families, and faculty.
- Provide immediate feedback to students regarding their engagement and participation.
- Communicate with families and teachers to keep them informed of student progress.
- Uphold Summit's discipline process and connect struggling students with appropriate resources.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Expeditions and other personnel to enhance the student experience.
- Assist with additional duties and projects as assigned.
Communication with Online Instructors
- Maintain regular communication with online course instructors regarding student engagement.
- Share insights about student interactions with course content.
General Education and Substitute Teaching Support
- During non-Expeditions periods, support teachers and students in core academic subjects or serve as a substitute teacher.
- Responsibilities include providing quality student experiences based on teacher plans and materials.
- Adapt instructional materials as needed and tutor small groups or individuals.
Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree required for substitute certification.
- Experience working with youth preferred but not mandatory.
- Familiarity with Google Platforms is beneficial.

- Must obtain a Substitute Teaching Permit or Certificate upon employment.
