Job Summary

The Agricultural Research Assistant will provide support for the field crop plant pathology research program at the Virginia Tech's Tidewater Agricultural Research and Extension Center. The successful candidate will assist in preparing land for planting, maintaining farm equipment, and assisting research technicians in planting, maintenance, and harvesting of research plots. Additionally, the assistant will mix and apply pesticides, assist in data collection for laboratory, greenhouse, and field research trials, and perform other duties as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare land for planting and maintain farm equipment
  • Assist research technicians in planting, maintenance, and harvesting of research plots
  • Mix and apply pesticides
  • Assist in data collection for laboratory, greenhouse, and field research trials

Requirements
  • Ability to work in an agricultural setting under hot and humid conditions
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs
  • Should be able to work independently or in a team environment
  • Must be licensed to operate a motor vehicle

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in small-plot agricultural research
  • Applicants should currently hold a private pesticide applicators license or exhibit the ability to obtain a private or registered technician pesticide license
  • Ability to use e-mail, spreadsheet, and word processing software

Pay and Benefits
  • $12 - $18 per hour; commensurate with experience
