JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department is responsible for independently planning, executing, and assessing nursing care in various patient scenarios, adhering to established standards of care and protocols. This role involves delivering direct nursing care, assuming educational and leadership responsibilities, and engaging in shared decision-making and quality improvement initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Formulates care plans that incorporate strategies to achieve desired outcomes.

· Executes care interventions and medical plans as necessary.

· Coordinates the delivery of patient care.

· Engages in patient education to enhance health and safety.

· Assesses progress towards established outcomes.

· Upholds ethical nursing practices.

· Maintains knowledge and skills that reflect current nursing practices.

· Integrates evidence-based practices and research findings into care.

· Contributes to quality nursing practices and shared decision-making by supporting council decisions and participating actively.

· Communicates effectively across all areas of practice.

· Demonstrates leadership within the professional setting.

· Collaborates with patients, families, and the inter-professional team in nursing practice.

· Utilizes appropriate resources to ensure safe, effective, and cost-efficient nursing services.

· Practices in a manner that is environmentally safe and healthy.

· Engages in the shared decision-making model of the NCH Healthcare System.

· Employs appropriate triage assessment tools for adult and pediatric patients.

· Possesses monitoring skills, including cardiac rhythm interpretation and hemodynamic assessments.

· Maintains certifications specific to the Emergency Department, including BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

· Ensures safe operation and troubleshooting of Emergency Department equipment.

· Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and serves as a preceptor.

· Cross-trains in all areas of the Emergency Department.

· Responsible for the care of admitted patients and the completion of inpatient orders.

· Ensures continuity of care by referring patients to appropriate follow-up services.

· Maintains proficiency in the patient tracking system and updates it promptly.

· Functions effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment, making swift critical decisions.

· Supports colleagues by being aware of departmental activities and assisting as needed.

· Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling to meet departmental needs and embraces new ideas.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS

For candidates with Emergency Department experience:

· Minimum of 1 year of experience as an RN in acute care is required, with at least one year in Emergency or Pediatric ICU.

· Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Florida.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

· Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are also required.

· ENPC and TNCC certifications are desirable.

For candidates without Emergency Department experience and new graduate RNs:

· Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in Florida.

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.

· ALS and PALS certifications will be obtained during the fellowship program.

· A BSN is preferred.

· Candidates are required to sign a Fellowship agreement committing to a 2-year employment in the Emergency Department post-training.

· Intermediate computer skills are necessary, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
