Job Description and Duties

The Bay Area Legal Office (Oakland) is seeking a dynamic, motivated Attorney III to join its team. Under the general direction of the Deputy Chief Counsel, Assistant Chief Counsel and/or Attorney Supervisor, the Attorney III will study, interpret and apply laws, court decisions and other authorities in the preparation of moderately difficult and/or complex cases, opinions, and briefs. The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental and land use/real property law and be able to prepare and present cases for trial and/or do a variety of transactional work.

Responsibilities
  • Study, interpret and apply laws, court decisions and other authorities in the preparation of cases, opinions, and briefs.
  • Prepare and present cases for trial and/or do a variety of transactional work.
  • Collaborate with the Deputy Chief Counsel, Assistant Chief Counsel and/or Attorney Supervisor to develop and implement legal strategies.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to Caltrans staff and management on environmental and land use/real property law matters.
Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Applicants must take the CalHR examination for the classification and be reachable on the eligibility list.
  • Must have a California State Bar License.

Working Conditions

The position is located in Oakland, Alameda County. Employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light, but may be required to travel to different courtrooms throughout the state. Telework may be available, but time in the office will be required.
